Wanna know what my favorite creative writing prompts for students look like? It’s roll-the-dice writing prompt sheets! They are seriously amazing and fun, and my students’ creativity really comes out whenever we use them. There’s a few reasons why they work so well, and I want to share them with you, because I hope you’ll give them a try!
I always try to find fun ways in which to prompt my students into writing. For some students it’s easy, and you don’t have to give them much before they go off already. But other students really need some encouragement. They need a fun task, or an engaging way in which the task is presented before they can start writing. And that’s exactly what roll-the-dice writing prompt sheets offer!
Wanna try one for yourself? Click here to grab this free Creative writing prompts pdf from my TPT store! It’s just print and go. Or, of course, print and bring dice and writing gear, and then go 🙂
Creative writing prompts for teens
If you’re looking for creative writing prompts teens, or slightly younger kids even, will love, then roll-the-dice sheets are your best bet! Here are the reasons why they are so fun:
- They offer a selection of prompts, so that students don’t have to come up with the parts of the story themselves.
- These ready-made sheets are just print and go. Just give to students and they can go off on their own with writing their story.
- Rolling dice in order to pick prompts provides an element of gamification and movement that students enjoy.
- The randomness of rolling dice and being surprised by the outcome is fun for students.
Short story creative writing prompts
These sheets work really well as prompts for short stories. I always tell my students that a story needs a few things: it needs characters, a setting and a plot or events. Roll-the-dice sheets contain 4 categories of prompts to roll. The first category is characters, the second is setting, the third is objects, and the fourth is exclamations that students must use in the story. Plot is something students need to come up with themselves, but that always speaks for itself once they have the other elements.
These four categories of creative writing prompts for short stories have to be picked from by rolling dice. Students should get dice, and then they roll the dice for each category and circle what they got. They can roll once or twice for each category, depending on how many prompts you want them to use. And once they have their prompts, they can start writing their story! Watch them become super creative!
The funnest fiction creative writing prompts
The fun thing is that you can have lots of different themes for these roll-the-dice writing prompt sheets. You can have funny creative writing prompts for comedy-type stories, or spooky prompts for Halloween. Or you can have romantic elements for Valentine’s Day stories, and adventure-style parts for action or adventure stories. You can use the seasons or any holiday as a theme for students’ short stories: the possibilities are endless!
It’s easy to create these sheets yourself. Just come up with some fun prompts in each category. However, I’ve also done a bunch of them for you that you can just grab from my TPT store! For example, this one for Halloween, this one for Winter, or these ones you can use at all times during the school year. Or grab the whole bundle of them for $5.50 by clicking here!
