I love teaching my students about the holidays that people in English speaking countries celebrate! These lessons both teach them about culture, and thus creates more understanding, and they help them practice their language skills. I have found that students really enjoy talking and writing about these types of topics, and I love listening to them!

Why celebrate St Patrick’s Day
Again, I think it’s really important to discuss holidays people in English speaking countries celebrate. Not only is it a fun topic to talk about, because it’s cheerful. But students also recognize celebrations because they will always have some of their own to compare them to. And I like using holidays as a topic to talk and write about in the target language as practice of said language. But I also love to teach vocabulary that it is associated with each holiday.
If you want to know how to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with your students in a fun way, then check out this article I wrote last year. It contains all the things I do, including reading, listening, writing, speaking, and vocabulary activities!
Some St Patrick’s Day classroom activities I like to do are watching videos about the history of the holiday and playing a dominoes game to revise Saint Patrick’s day vocabulary!
St Patrick’s Day writing
One of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day writing activities is to answer a couple of Saint Patrick’s Day related prompts! Prompts that have something to do with leprechauns, a pot of gold, and luck. I have come up with five different questions or statements that I would like my students to answer or finish. In the past, I’ve sometimes given them only one prompt, and other times I have given them all the prompts to answer when I had more time.
My students each have a journal that stays in the classroom at all times, and I usually get them to answer the prompts in those journals. Other times I felt like displaying their work, and so I provided them with line sheets. Both options really show you their capabilities at writing! And it helps prompt students’ creativity so well.
