Are you looking for some fun ideas for summer theme lesson plans? Then let me tell you about my activities! I use these right before summer break and right after. They incorporate all the language skills and really give kids that summer-y vibe!
Those last few lessons of the year need to be fun, not for me and for my students. And right after summer break, I want to start with summer-related activities too, to ease into things. So I’ve come up with some things I know the kids enjoy! So here we go:
Lesson plan for summer season
Let’s start my summer lesson plan ideas off with some speaking! I come up with a bunch of questions that I want my students to answer. Like: What is your favorite thing about summer? And: What is your favorite activity to do during summer break? I love using discussion cards for this. I give each small group a set and they discuss all the questions together.
Then I enjoy covering some summer vocabulary, like beach towel, sunscreen, and flip-flops. I use matching games for this, such as bingo, dominoes, memory and find the match! The way I play these games has students match words with their pictures. This is excellent brain training, and fun! Or you could use a worksheet for this purpose.
After that,
I get students to write some things about the summer season. I use roughly the same questions as I have on the discussion cards, but now arranged in a fun flip book! I love getting my students to write down their opinions and I enjoy reading what they are.
The last of my summer theme classroom ideas is to do some reading and listening to summer-themed texts. Watch this video about the season or this text. Ask students to summarize what they’ve just heard or read, or get them to do something creative with it. Some ideas are to write a letter or email to someone in the video or text, or to create an imaginary interview with them.
