Are you looking for some fun International Women’s Day activities ideas to do with your students? Then I’ve got just the stuff for you. Below I will tell you three fun activities that I’ve got planned for my students. And I will also tell you what other teachers are doing with their students on international women’s day, just because that’s fun!
I think International Women’s Day is a huge day to celebrate because I think our students can still benefit from realizing why we need to celebrate this day as well as the time that is Women’s History Month. I like to discuss holidays with my students in my lessons, as there is usually lots to talk about, like history, traditions, and our own personal experiences. And you can really get them talking on these topics, which is what you want! Here are some fun International Women’s Day activities ideas:
Why do we celebrate International Women’s Day
If students are asking ‘Why do we celebrate National Women’s Day?’ then they will need to first be taught about the need for the day and its history. International Women’s Day, March 8th, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. IWD gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
International women’s day activities for students
Have students read texts about the topic, like this one from Brittanica Kids. Or get them to research important women in history via this article on National Geographic Kids. You might also want them to watch videos on the history of Women’s History Month, like this one from the Wise Channel, or this cute one from Alex Kids Fun. I’ve collected some of these and more tasks on my choice board that I use with my students to give them an easy task that still has them learning a lot!
Some other International Women’s Day lesson activities include writing about important women, and talking about it. Or you could have them write a letter to an important woman in history. You could have your students answer one or more writing prompts about important women in the world. These can be important women that everyone knows, like athletes, singers, actors, etcetera, or people in their own lives, like their family or women they see at school.
I’ve created a flip book specifically for this purpose, see below. It has all the prompts in one place, and students get to take a fun reminder home about important women after the day is done.
International women’s day group activities
Some group activities you could have students do are small group discussions or a collaborative project. I like to use discussion cards for small group discussions, so that students know what to talk about with each other. Each question will prompt them into thinking about the topic. Here too you can ask them about what women they think have been or are important in history.
A collaborative project could be where you have students prepare a presentation about an important woman in history. They could research her personal life, her working life and her achievements, her influence on modern times, and they could draw some personal connections to her person. A fun addition could be creating a poster with photos or even a drawing of the woman.
I’d love to do something like this one day with my older students. But unfortunately they will be taking important tests this year around this time, so I will have to skip it this year..
So I hope I’ve given you some ideas..
With these International Women’s Day teacher resources! Try some writing with my flip book, or some small group discussion with my discussion cards. Or some language skills tasks with my choice board! Or do a collaborative project. I hope you have fun with the day no matter what you do!
