Did you know that word trainers can help your students revise all the words they learned this year in a quick and fun way! Are you worried your students will forget all the vocabulary you taught them during the school year? These five word trainers are excellent for reviewing vocabulary and making sure students retain their meaning! Let me tell you about my personal top 5.
Word trainers for personal lists
Quizlet
Quizlet allows students to enter their own list of words, or you can choose a list to practice for them. When they enter their own words, they can choose pictures to match the vocabulary word, and there are several ways of practicing the list, such as little multiple choice tests, a matching game, and flashcards.
WRTS
A surprising favorite of my students is a website that’s not flashy and cool at all: students just add the words they want to study, and the website will test them on their knowledge. It does also have that option of adding a picture to the word, so that’s really useful.
Memrise
Memrise allows students to practice premade lists, or they can make their own. Then it will test them on their knowledge in various ways that keep the review engaging, such as typing the word after seeing the definition and choosing the correct multiple-choice answer. This website is all about challenges and trophies that students can win, so that’s fun!
Word trainers for pre-made lists
Duolingo
Duolingo is for learning all of the language, not just words, but I think it’s a great app for learning words in context and in action, which is so valuable for retention. Plus, it has all these celebratory sounds, challenges and even a reading comprehension section. I love using this one for learning Spanish myself!
LearnMatch
LearnMatch is another great app for lists that already exist. Students can select them based on their level and it will give them the right vocabulary to practice. They have games to make it fun to learn, as well as translation function and a personal dictionary.
Do you use any of these word trainers with your students? Which one is your favorite? Check them out if you’re not using them yet, because they might be a perfect fit for your students!
