lesson plan for fathers day

3 fun ideas for a brilliant lesson plan for Father’s Day

Are you looking for fun things to fill your lesson plan for Father’s Day with your students? I love celebrating these holidays with my students, because these are topics all of them can relate to and will have something to say about. And if there’s anything I love is getting my students to talk or write in English!

A lesson plan for Father’s Day that will engage your students

Father’s Day classroom activities can be super fun! However, be mindful of those situations in which a student has lost a father, or has no father for whatever reason, because it may be difficult for them to discuss the topic. Ask beforehand whether this is the case, and find ways to address the topic in a different way.

But when you are able to talk about the topic freely, there is so much you can do with it. Below you’ll find my ideas on what to do with your students for Father’s Day.

What are the best Father’s Day ESL activities?

Speaking

To activate students’ thoughts on their fathers, get them to talk about the topic. You could ask them to explain what their dad is like to their classmates, either in small groups or in pairs. I like small groups or pairs for this because it gives all students a chance to talk. You could also ask them a bunch of questions about fathers, such as: ‘What is your father really good at?’ or ‘What is your dad’s least favorite chore in the house?’ Getting them to answer these questions in small groups will provide a safe environment in which they will not hesitate to talk. I love using discussion cards for this, so if you have a chance to whip up some cards with questions about fathers, that would be so awesome!

Vocabulary activity about adjectives

Another fun activity for students would be to learn new adjectives to describe their father. Get them to write down some words to describe their dad in the L1. Then have them find the translations to these words in a dictionary. Finally, get them to find synonyms for each word. Alternatively, provide them with a list of adjectives and get them to choose the ones that fit their father. Then have them write descriptions of their dad using this newly acquired vocabulary.

Writing a letter to Dad

Get students to write a letter to their dad about why they are grateful for him, or explaining why he is the best dad in the world. Tell them to give lots of arguments and examples, so that their father really feels appreciated. And remind them of what a proper letter looks like, to even practice letter writing skills in the process. This letter must of course be brought home, so that dad can really feel special on Father’s Day. I’ve got my awesome letter paper from Action all ready to go!
