Wanna know what the best question game ever is? In my opinion it’s Black Stories! Black Stories is a card game in which one player has a card that contains a riddle in the form of one sentence. This player reads the riddle to the other players. The question then is: what happened?
On the other side of the card is the answer to the riddle, which the player does not read to the other players. The other players have to then ask questions to find out what happened. Questions can only be answered with yes or no. Whoever finds out what happened first, wins the game. I love this game because it gets really competitive, and it’s super mysterious to think about what could have happened. The riddles are a bit macabre, and sometimes even true stories!

You get one sentence, for example: “A woman decides to sell her husband’s Porsche for a mere 500 euros.” And then you have to start asking questions that you think could lead to the answer of what happened or why did this happen. How will you get to the answer?
If you are playing with multiple players, then they could each be on a different page. You will wonder why other players are asking the questions that they are. And they might give you ideas of what leads to follow if they get a ‘yes’ in response.
In terms of language teaching, I love this game! It helps students form questions properly. And it helps them hear how other students form questions as well. Speaking and listening skills go hand in hand. Playing this game also helps them content-wise, in that they get to piece together a puzzle in the target language. When they succeed, my students are always so proud! They ask to play Black Stories all the time!

This is also one of the best questions games for couples! I played this game on a road trip in the United States. We had to drive for a super long time, and so we had time to ask all of these questions. You definitely need some time for players to get to the right answer. But it’s a great game for couples that want to pass the time in a fun way!
