Are you looking for some fun Mother’s Day teaching ideas for your language lessons? I’ve come up with a few that I’d like to share! I think Mother’s Day is an excellent opportunity for kids to think about what they are grateful for in their moms, so I take full advantage of this day. I do recommend finding out about sensitive situations in this regard first, before you do any of my Mother’s Day teaching ideas below.
Mother’s Day Teaching Ideas for Speaking
Get students to talk about their mothers. Mothers are an everyday topic and a topic they know well, so they won’t have to think long about what they want to say. It makes it easier to start the conversation and to keep it going for a while. You can give them pre-made questions, like: ‘What does your mother like to do?’ and ‘What do you love most about your mother?’ or you can just have them do an improvised conversation. You could also give them prompts, such as hobbies, food, pet peeves, her job, chores around the house, friends, family and just have them discuss whatever they want about these topics.
Mother’s Day Reading Activity
Another of my Mother’s Day teaching ideas is a reading exercise, in which they will learn about other moms, such as the hardest working moms of the animal kingdom in this article. Ask them who they think is the coolest mom in the article and why they feel that way.
Mother’s Day Writing Activity
When they’ve talked about or read enough texts about moms, have them write a letter to their mom explaining why they love her so much. Make an essay type exercise in which they really have to give arguments to show their point. Remind them of what a good letter looks like as well. Give them some time make it look pretty too, so they can actually give it to their moms too. It’s a lovely keepsake for mom, and a great reminder for her to see what her child can already do.

And that’s what I will do when I am back at school on Tuesday!
So see if there is anything you’d like to do as well! I hope I’ve inspired you to have fun with Mother’s Day in your lessons!
