Wanna know how this Which Would You Rather game can help improve your students’ fluency in speaking? Then stay right here! I love thinking of games that will prompt my students into speaking to each other in the target language! And this game has the added bonus of really making them think of what to say. This is because they really have to convince each other that they made the best choice!
This fun activity, also known as a What Would You Rather game, is a winner with my students! The game asks them to choose the best option out of two, and to give reasons for why they choose it. It’s amazing to hear their reasoning, which is hilarious at times 🙂 Let me tell you why I love it!
Would You Rather game instructions
What is Would You Rather game and how does it work, you ask? So it works like this: you give students two options to choose from. For example, “would you rather have wet socks all day, or only be able to laugh loudly when you’re talking?” You can give students a sheet full of options like these, and they’ll have to work their way through the sheet. Or you can give them one set of options at a time using cards.
Students then have to read the two options they can choose from and decide which one they like better. The task is then for them to tell another person or small group why they prefer one option over the other. Students are really good at describing why one option is better than the other, because they will have an opinion. And they love hearing what the other person thinks, and why they think that!
It’s a great game for students to put into words certain arguments they have. And it’s also great to have them do this in the target language. It’s a wonderful speaking practice tool that is also fun and entertaining!
Questions for Would You Rather game
Would You Rather game questions can relate to anything in life! You can ask them really strange questions like the one about the wet socks, or them only being able to speak with a full mouth of marshmallows. You can make it as crazy as you like! I love the game Dilemmarama on Amazon for this too. But I’ve also made my own game sheets to suit my own students, which gives them easier options to work with.
My game sheets and cards include questions like: “which would you rather have: all the books you want or all the TV shows you want?” Or “which would you rather have: the power to fly or the power to be invisible?” It also includes sheets that only have pictures. They will have students choose “oranges, or bananas”, “mittens, or gloves?” or ”jellybeans, or ice cream?” Options that students are familiar with, and can answer easily!
As I mentioned you could use Would You Rather game cards for students to use, and go over one set of options at a time. Or you can use sheets with all the options in this ‘which would you choose’ activity. My game includes 5 sheets, or 5 pages of cards to print off and use right away.
Laminate cards for durability! And have students circle the options they choose on the sheets! Click here to check out my game now!
