Wanna know some fun World Book Day ideas for schools? You’ve come to the right place. I love that there is a day that’s dedicated to appreciating books! Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, and I enjoy getting my students to enjoy reading too. That’s why I think this 23rd of April, World Book Day, should not go by unnoticed!
I will share some of the World Book Day ideas for teachers I have that I do with my students. I have 5 different grade levels, and you should decide which idea fits your age groups. Though I think in some form or other you can do them with all ages, we all know groups can be extremely different to work with. So see what fits your needs. Here we go!

World Book Day ideas for secondary schools
A fun activity around books would be to have students write a piece of text in which they show a deeper understanding of the story. A few fun examples are:
- Write a letter to the main character to ask any questions you are left with.
- Create a brochure for the area the story takes place in.
- Write a new ending or new beginning to the story.
- Come up with a new character to add to the novel and describe in detail.
- Create a Wanted poster for a character from the book.
Get students to really make the chosen text type look like that text type. Have them think about layout and conventions. For example, a brochure has pictures, lists, information, a front cover, and is folded, etc. The more authentic the piece of text looks, the cooler! World Book Day ideas for groups
I’ve also got some fun World Book Day ideas for a group. Again, depending on the type of group you have in front of you, choose your activity. You could, for example:
- Get students to act out a scene from a well-known book.
- Pretend to have a talk show about the different books students are reading, or even about the same book. You could even have them pretend the world from the book is real and they are there to talk about the events that occurred as though they really did.
- Play a speed dating game in which students must prepare a description of one (or more) character(s) and get their partner at the table to guess who they are thinking of. You could make this like the game ‘Who Is It’, where one person asks the questions and the other answers with ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Or you could have student A give the description until student B gets it.
- Get students to create a Kahoot! or Quizizz about the books they have read together so far. They would play those quizzes as a group to check who knows the most.
And then there are some World Book Day ideas for dressing up! Mine are too old for that, and I am actually not a huge fan of dressing up myself, but you might like to! Try these:
- Get kids to dress up as their favorite hero of the story.
- Have them dress up as a villain.
- Get them to dress as a genre of literature.
And those are some of the things you can do! Pick and choose what you have time for, and have fun with it! Happy World Book Day!
